Body Time began business as the original Body Shop in 1970 in Berkeley, California.  At the time, skin care products were produced and sold primarily by large cosmetic companies and the opportunity to buy artisan soaps and custom scented skin care products was extremely limited. The original Body Shop introduced several new concepts that set this local skin care company apart from the mainstream cosmetics industry. The products themselves were displayed in simple plastic bottles with minimal packaging and handwritten labels. The products were biodegradable and many of them emphasized natural ingredients.

The original Body Shop also featured a wide selection of concentrated perfume oils which customers could use to make their own original perfumes and colognes or to have their lotions or body oils “custom scented” with their choice of fragrance.

The original Body Shop immediately struck a chord with its customers.  Because of its minimal packaging and emphasis on quality ingredients, the original Body Shop was able to provide its customers with better products and at a lower price than what the major cosmetic companies were offering.  The ability to custom scent products at the original Body Shop also gave it a personal touch that major cosmetic companies have never been able to copy.

In 1992, the founders of the company sold the name “The Body Shop” to a London skin care company and renamed its Berkeley-based skin care stores "Body Time".  While the name has changed, Body Time remains true to the core values of the company’s founders; quality products, reasonable prices, a concern for the environment and a commitment to customer service.
